28-HR Armed Security Officer Course
The Davis Security Institute offers a 28 hour Armed Security Officer Course. This course meets or exceeds Florida standards for training those private security officers who will carry sidearms on duty. The course consists of training in Florida’s self-defense, firearms, use-of-force and arrest laws as well as tactical training and live fire qualification.
The philosophy ofthe training is that an officer must be prepared to survive both the physical attack and the subsequent legal attack. Surviving both attacks requires knowledge and training.
In the 28 hour course, officers are taught that the mind is the ultimate weapon in armed confrontations. An officer must have both the skill and the will to survive and win a gunfight.
Topics taught in the 28 hour course include:

  • Florida laws.

  • Operation of both revolvers and semiautomatic sidearms.

  • Safety of weapons on the job, off duty, and at home.

  • Tactical shooting; cover, concealment, multiple target engagement.

  • After-action safety considerations; scanning for additional targets.

The cost for the 28 hour course is $150. Students are required to purchase 150 rounds of ammunition (minimum) from the range. The range safety rules prohibit ammunition not purchased from the range being fired on the range. Revolvers and semiautomatic sidearms can be rented from the range at nominal cost, as can hearing protectors.
A student is welcome to qualify with two types of sidearms at no additional cost. Targets will be furnished.
Instruction in use of the shotgun is available by special arrangement.
Annual recertification for armed officers is by appointment. The cost is $55, but if two or more officers recertify together, the cost is reduced to $50 each. Recertification with two types of weapons can be done at the same cost. 150 rounds of ammunition must be purchased from the range for each weapon.
